Rafael Jodar, Marin Cilic and Dino Prizmic were winners on the opening day of this year’s Mutua Madrid Open on Wednesday, while Roberto Bautista Agut waved goodbye to the Spanish crowd following his final appearance at the event.
ATPTour.com looks back at the biggest Wednesday stories through video.

Spanish star Jodar lifted the roof on Wednesday in Madrid, where he battled past Jesper de Jong 2-6, 7-5, 6-4 to earn victory on his tournament debut. The 19-year-old lifted his first ATP Tour trophy in Marrakech earlier this month and then reached the semi-finals at the ATP 500 in Barcelona.
The wild card was outside the Top 600 just 12 months ago but is now at a career-high No. 42.
Real Madrid star and football idol Jude Bellingham cheered on Jodar in Madrid on Wednesday. Jodar and Bellingham had a brief chat on Wednesday and then posed for a photo together.
Bautista Agut competed for the last time in Madrid and received a presentation from the tournament. Thiago Agustin Tirante overcame the Spaniard 6-2, 6-4, but Bautista Agut produced a final moment of magic in the second set to the delight of the home crowd on Manolo Santana Stadium. The 38-year-old’s best result at the ATP Masters 1000 event came in 2014 when he reached the semi-finals.
Cilic earned his first win in Madrid since 2022 when he battled past Zizou Bergs 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 to set an exciting second-round match against #NextGenATP star Joao Fonseca. Cilic, a quarter-finalist in the Spanish capital in 2019, made his tournament debut in 2008, just two years after Fonseca, 19, was born.
Dino Prizmic earned a big win, defeating former Top 10 star Matteo Berrettini. The Croatian, who competed at the 2025 Next Gen ATP Finals, produced many fun moments on court, including this tweener in the closing stages of the second set.
Shortly after, the 20-year-old sealed just his second ATP main draw victory and set a second-round clash with fourth-seeded American Ben Shelton. Qualifier Prizmic is competing at a career-high No. 87 in the PIF ATP Rankings this week.
Tomas Machac was an opening-day winner in the Spanish capital, overcoming Francisco Comesana 3-6, 7-6(3), 6-3 to maintain his good recent form. The Czech advanced to the fourth round earlier this month in Monte-Carlo, where he ended Jannik Sinner’s 37-set streak at Masters 1000 events.
Hubert Hurkacz also advanced, defeating Portuguese qualifier Jaime Faria 6-3, 6-3. Hurkacz, who reached the quarter-finals in Madrid in 2022, has struggled to find his best form this year. The Pole is 8-8 on the season, according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index. Hurkacz did miss the final five months of last year due to injury.
