Novak Djokovic has withdrawn from the upcoming Mutua Madrid Open due to injury, the tournament announced on Friday.

The former No. 1 player in the PIF ATP Rankings last competed at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells in March and missed the Miami Open presented by Itau later that month due to a right shoulder injury. The Serbian is a three-time titlist at the Madrid ATP Masters 1000 event, where he most recently lifted the trophy in 2019.

Djokovic wrote on social media Friday: “Madrid, unfortunately I won’t be able to compete this year. I am continuing my recovery in order to be back soon. Hasta pronto!”

Djokovic is 7-2 for the season, according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index, a tally which includes his run to the championship match at the Australian Open. The record 40-time Masters 1000 champion is next scheduled to compete at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia in Rome, which runs from 6 to 17 May.
