LAREDO (ESP, Apr 18): Slovenia’s Klara Lukan made history as she became the first European to break the 30-minute barrier in the 10km on the road. Lukan won at the Villa de Laredo 10k (WA Label) in 29:50 (14:54/14:56) to shave 17 seconds from Megan Keith’s previous European record, the fourth time the record has been broken this year. “When I saw the result, I cried with happiness. This is a historic feat, I am the first from Europe to run below the magic mark. I did what I had imagined and planned with coach Tevž Korent, who believed in me. He had told me some time ago that I could run the European record, that I was ready for it, and that is what happened,” said Lukan. Germany’s Konstanze Klosterhalfen broke her national record in finishing second in 30:37, with Esther Pfeiffer third in 30:45, breaking the previous German record by one second. Ethiopia’s Biniam Mehary won the men’s race in 26:55 PB by exactly one minute from fellow Ethiopian Hagos Eyob (27:55 PB), with Great Britain’s Rory Leonard third in 27:57.
