Joao Fonseca is now firmly established as one of the brightest stars in the sport, consistently competing on the biggest stages and going toe to toe with the very best players in the world. Yet his rapid rise can be traced back to a single opportunity created by the PIF ATP Next Gen Accelerator.

The programme is designed to expand the pathway for the sport’s most promising young players by granting them access to ATP Tour events they might not otherwise be able to enter. Using the Accelerator, Fonseca entered the ATP 250 in Buenos Aires, where he went on to win his maiden ATP Tour title.

When the then-18-year-old gained entry in the Argentine capital in February last year, he stepped into a moment that would ultimately redefine the trajectory of his career. At the time, Fonseca had just broken into the Top 100 of the PIF ATP Rankings at No. 99 and was searching for the breakthrough result that would match the growing belief around his potential.

That belief had intensified following his standout triumph at the Next Gen ATP Finals, where he had underlined his credentials as one of the brightest young stars in the game. Yet it was in Buenos Aires, an event he would not have accessed without the PIF ATP Next Gen Accelerator, where Fonseca transformed that promise into a defining statement on the ATP Tour.

“It was a very important moment for me,” Fonseca told ATPTour.com, reflecting on his Buenos Aires opportunity. “It was my first title and because of that, I entered the Top 60 and got to play the big tournaments. It was a big thing for me. It was a great opportunity. I’m very happy the ATP are doing this programme for the young kids and the young generation, because it’s very helpful.”

Fonseca made the most of his opportunity in dramatic fashion, producing a series of fearless performances against home favourites to surge through the draw. His run was highlighted by a remarkable quarter-final victory against Mariano Navone, in which he saved two match points before carrying that momentum all the way to the title with a composed win over Francisco Cerundolo in the final.

That maiden ATP Tour title proved to be far more than a milestone moment and it became the catalyst for a sustained rise across the 2025 season. In the months that followed, the Brazilian showcased his growing maturity by reaching the third round at multiple marquee tournaments, including the ATP Masters 1000 events in Miami and Cincinnati, as well as major tournaments Roland Garros and Wimbledon.

These runs not only demonstrated his ability to compete across different surfaces, but also confirmed that his success in Buenos Aires was the foundation of something much bigger. Fonseca continued to build on that platform as the season progressed, adding another significant chapter late in the year by capturing his second — and biggest — ATP Tour title at the ATP 500 in Basel.

By the end of 2025, Fonseca surged to a career-high No. 24 in the PIF ATP Rankings, completing a remarkable rise that could be traced back to the opportunity he seized through the PIF ATP Next Gen Accelerator.

The programme provided Fonseca with the stage to test himself at the highest level and the belief to prove he belonged among the game’s elite. What followed was not just a single breakthrough result, but the emergence of a player capable of consistently challenging the best on the ATP Tour.

Now 19, Fonseca has continued his rise in 2026 and continues to push the sport’s biggest names. In consecutive tournaments, the Rio de Janeiro native took Jannik Sinner to two tie-break sets in Indian Wells, pushed Carlos Alcaraz in Miami, and then went to three sets with Alexander Zverev in Monte-Carlo, where he reached his first ATP Masters 1000 quarter-final.

Each of those performances has reinforced the same message about Fonseca’s rapid development and his readiness to compete at the very top of the game. Yet the origins of his rise remain rooted in Buenos Aires, where one opportunity through the PIF ATP Next Gen Accelerator became the launchpad for a breakthrough season and the arrival of a new force on the ATP Tour.
