Jack Draper suffered a heartbreaking exit from the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell on Monday when the Briton retired in the third set of his opening-round clash against Tomas Martin Etcheverry due to injury.
The 24-year-old was trailing 1-4 in the third set when he walked to the net and ended the contest after one hour and 45 minutes at the clay-court ATP 500 event.
Following his retirement, the Briton shared his thoughts on social media.
“Sad to retire in Barcelona,” Draper wrote in an Instagram post. “I’ve tried hard these last months to stay positive and give my all. It will take time, but I will work my way out of this. Thank you for all the support throughout this process.”
Draper, currently No. 27 in the PIF ATP Rankings, was competing in his first match since his opening-round loss to Reilly Opelka in Miami. Earlier in March, the Briton reached the quarter-finals in Indian Wells, where he defeated Novak Djokovic in the fourth round en route to the last eight.
Last season, the 24-year-old reached a career-high No. 4 in the PIF ATP Rankings. However, he was forced to shut down his season in September due to an arm injury. Draper returned to competition in February this year in a Davis Cup tie against Norway before competing at the ATP 500 event in Dubai.
