The Eden Gardens played host to a classic IPL 2026 thriller on Sunday, as the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) squared off against the Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the 28th match of the season. While the match was decided in the final over, the real fireworks started post-match. Veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has pulled no punches in his critique of RR captain Riyan Parag, accusing the young leader of a tactical blunder that potentially cost the Royals the game.
Ravichandran Ashwin questions Riyan Parag over limited use of Ravindra Jadeja against KKR
In a scathing analysis on his YouTube channel, Ashwin accused Parag of failing to trust Ravindra Jadeja, the team’s most senior and decorated player. Despite Jadeja being the pick of the bowlers, returning remarkable figures of 2/8 in just 3 overs, he was not given his full quota of four overs, a move Ashwin finds inexcusable.
“You have a world-class left-arm spinner. Sure, numbers and data can tell you something, but he has conceded only 9 or 11 runs in three overs and taken two wickets,” Ashwin remarked. He suggested that Parag fell into the trap of over-analyzing matchups rather than backing the hot hand.
“When Rinku Singh tried to hit, he was so close to getting out, but you thought, ‘I am an off-spinner; I can put pressure on these two left-handers, but Jaddu won’t be able to.’ Though Ravi Bishnoi can, you felt Jaddu won’t be able to. I am telling you, this is the mindset,” he added, lambasting the Rajasthan Royals captain.
He argued that shielding a veteran like Jadeja from left-handers sends a damaging message to the locker room. “It is possible that Jaddu bowls and the batter hits two sixes, but by not bowling him, you are not showing trust in your bowling unit in the long term,” Ashwin stated.
Ashwin further emphasized that such captaincy stifles a player’s confidence. “If a left-arm spinner knows he isn’t wanted against a left-hander, he won’t even try. As a captain or team management, if you are telling him, ‘This is not your job,’ look at what happens to the ball… if Ravindra Jadeja had taken that wicket of Rinku Singh, he would have been the Man of the Match today,” he quipped.
Drawing a sharp comparison to batting mainstays, Ashwin concluded: “Does it ever happen that you don’t send Mitchell Marsh to bat? You don’t send Rishabh Pant? You don’t send Nicholas Pooran? That never happens. So, what I am saying is that if you can take Brijesh Sharma, who has no experience in the IPL, and give him the 18th and 20th overs in his first game, you can definitely give them to Jadeja.”

The tactical debate surrounding Jadeja’s usage became the focal point because of the narrow margin of RR’s defeat. Batting first, the Rajasthan Royals posted a modest 155/9. The innings started brightly with Vaibhav Sooryavanshi smashing a quickfire 46 off 28 balls, supported by Yashasvi Jaiswal’s 39. However, the KKR spin duo of Varun Chakravarthy (3/14) and Sunil Narine (2/26) choked the middle order, leaving RR with a sub-par total.
In response, KKR’s chase was anything but smooth. Jofra Archer and Ravindra Jadeja tore through the top order, leaving KKR reeling at 85/6 by the 14th over. Jadeja was lethal, removing Angkrish Raghuvanshi and Rovman Powell while maintaining an economy of 2.66.
However, the game shifted when Parag opted to use himself and the inexperienced Brijesh Sharma in the closing stages rather than finishing Jadeja’s overs. Rinku Singh seized the opportunity, anchoring the chase with a brilliant, unbeaten 53 off 34 balls. Supported by a late cameo from Anukul Roy (29 off 16), Rinku guided KKR to 161/6, clinching a 4-wicket victory with just two balls to spare. While Chakravarthy took home the Player of the Match trophy, the what-ifs regarding Jadeja’s unused over will haunt the Royals’ camp.
