Jannik Sinner arrives at the Mutua Madrid Open with a clear opportunity to strengthen his grip on World No. 1 and build further momentum in what could be a defining stretch of the season.

The Italian returned to the top of the PIF ATP Rankings after his statement victory against Carlos Alcaraz in the championship match at the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters earlier this month. With that result, Sinner not only underlined his authority at the summit, but also set the tone for a period in which he has a chance to consolidate his position.

Sinner leads the field at the ATP Masters 1000 event in Madrid and will be chasing a fifth consecutive ATP Masters 1000 title, having already triumphed in Paris last season and at Indian Wells, Miami and Monte-Carlo in 2026. That remarkable stretch has translated to a 350-point cushion over Alcaraz — who withdrew from Madrid due to injury — atop the PIF ATP Live Rankings.

Sinner has begun his 68th career week at No. 1, two clear of Alcaraz’s 66. With his recent stretch of dominance, the Italian is in good position to further extend his stay, beginning in Madrid.

The top seed’s best result in the Spanish capital came in his last appearance there in 2024, when he reached the quarter-finals before withdrawing ahead of his clash with Felix Auger-Aliassime. Having not competed last year, he is not defending any points and has plenty of confidence thanks to his 17-match winning streak. Since Alcaraz withdrew due to injury, that gives Sinner an opportunity to build on his advantage.

Beyond Madrid, Sinner has 650 finalist points to defend in Rome and 1,300 points from his run to the final at Roland Garros last year, when he squandered three championship points to Alcaraz in an all-time classic match. The Spaniard is defending 3,000 points: 1,000 in Rome and 2,000 at Roland Garros.

Sinner has also put himself in a strong early position to claim ATP Year-End No. 1 presented by PIF honours for the first time since 2024. The 24-year-old leads Alcaraz by 260 points in the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin and, while there is still a long way to go in the season, it is a buffer on which the Italian can build on during the rest of the European clay swing.

The World No. 1 will begin his Mutua Madrid Open against a qualifier: Benjamin Bonzi or Titouan Droguet. Sinner leads Bonzi 3-0 in their Lexus ATP Head2Head series, but has needed a deciding set against the Frenchman twice. The 27-time tour-level titlist has never faced Droguet.
