Sinner worked hard on Friday for his opening win in Madrid. The Italian, who is aiming to become the first player in series history (since 1990) to win five consecutive Masters 1000 titles, outlasted Benjamin Bonzi 6-7(6), 6-1, 6-4 to advance to the third round.
Hometown hero Jodar earned an upset win by cruising past World No. 8 Alex de Minaur 6-3, 6-1. With the triumph, Jodar clinched his maiden Top 10 win. The Spaniard will next face fellow #NextGenATP star Joao Fonseca.

Prizmic notched the biggest win of his career by upsetting recent Munich champion Shelton 6-4, 6-7(4), 7-6(5) in the second round. The Croatian, who defeated former World No. 6 Matteo Berrettini in the opening round, produced many electrifying moments during his second-round match against Shelton, including this magnificent lob in the third set.
With the victory, Prizmic advanced to the third round of an ATP Masters 1000 event for the first time.
Vit Kopriva also earned an upset win by defeating 2024 champion Andrey Rublev. The 28-year-old broke Rublev’s serve once in both sets to secure a one-hour, 14-minute victory, highlighted by this sizzling spinner that sealed an early break in the opener.
In other action, recent Barcelona champion Arthur Fils earned his first victory in Madrid on Friday when he outlasted Ignacio Buse 6-7(4), 7-6(3), 7-5. The Frenchman will next face Emilio Nava.
Lorenzo Musetti also made a strong start in Madrid. The 27-year-old overcame Hubert Hurkacz 6-4, 7-6(4) to earn his first Masters 1000 victory of the season. The Italian, who reached the semi-finals in the Spanish capital last year, will face Tallon Griekspoor in the third round.
