Chennai Super Kings’ IPL 2026 campaign has taken another hit, with left-arm pacer Khaleel Ahmed officially ruled out for the remainder of the season due to a right quadriceps injury. The 28-year-old sustained the injury during CSK’s recent match against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, a game they went on to win but at a significant cost.

The incident happened in the 17th over of KKR’s chase, when Khaleel suddenly pulled up midway through his run-up, clearly in discomfort. Medical examinations later confirmed a Grade 2 tear, which will require approximately 10 to 12 weeks of recovery – effectively ending his IPL 2026 journey.
This development couldn’t have come at a worse time for CSK. Khaleel had been a regular part of the playing XI, featuring in all five matches so far. While his wicket tally stood at two, his real value lay in his control and economy rate. At 8.67, he had been the most economical pacer in the CSK lineup, offering much-needed stability in the bowling unit.
What makes the situation more concerning is that Khaleel’s injury adds to an already growing list of unavailable players. The Super Kings are still without MS Dhoni, who is recovering from a calf strain, while Nathan Ellis is also sidelined. To make matters worse, Ellis’s replacement, Spencer Johnson, is yet to join the squad due to fitness concerns of his own.

1) Mukesh Choudhary

Another strong contender is Chetan Sakariya, who also brings left-arm variety along with valuable IPL experience. Having played for multiple franchises, Sakariya has built a reputation for his disciplined bowling and clever use of variations, especially on slower pitches. His ability to bowl cutters and maintain tight lines makes him well-suited for conditions at Chepauk. Despite going unsold in the IPL 2026 auction, his recent domestic performances suggest he still has plenty to offer.
3) Akash Madhwal
If CSK decide to look beyond a like-for-like replacement, Akash Madhwal presents an interesting alternative. A right-arm pacer known for his exceptional death bowling, Madhwal made headlines in IPL 2023 with a stunning 5/5 performance. His strength lies in his accuracy, particularly with yorkers in the final overs – a skill that could prove invaluable for CSK, especially in close matches. While he may not offer the left-arm angle, his ability to deliver under pressure could make him a valuable addition.

Internal options and overseas considerations for CSK
Apart from external signings, CSK could also explore internal options. One such name is Ramakrishna Ghosh, a promising right-arm pacer who has impressed in domestic cricket. Known for his pace and wicket-taking ability, Ghosh enjoyed a standout Vijay Hazare Trophy campaign, picking up 17 wickets in seven matches. His familiarity with captain Ruturaj Gaikwad could also work in his favour.
There is also the possibility of bringing in an overseas player like Zakary Foulkes from New Zealand. The young pacer has shown promise in T20 cricket, with 77 wickets in 68 matches. However, this option comes with its own complications, as CSK are already fielding four overseas players. Bringing in Foulkes would require reshuffling the playing XI, which may not be ideal at this stage of the tournament.
Ultimately, the decision will come down to what CSK value more – continuity or a change in approach. A like-for-like replacement would help maintain balance, while a specialist like Madhwal could strengthen a specific area, such as death bowling.
