Jannik Sinner will retake the No. 1 spot in the PIF ATP Rankings on Monday from Carlos Alcaraz after beating the Spaniard in a winner-takes-all Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters final. But the battle from World No. 1 is far from over.

Ahead of Monte-Carlo, Alcaraz made clear that he knew his work was cut out as far as fending off Sinner. And in large part, that is true.

At this point of the clay season, Alcaraz has 3,330 points to defend compared to 1,950 points for Sinner. Given the Italian’s 110-point lead, Sinner certainly has the advantage.

But Alcaraz will have an opportunity to reclaim World No. 1 as soon as next Monday. The Spaniard is defending 330 points in Barcelona, where he reached the final last year. If the new World No. 2 wins the ATP 500 event, he will swap spots with Sinner again on 20 April. Anything short of a trophy, Sinner will remain No. 1.

Neither man is defending any points at the ATP Masters 1000 event in Madrid, where Alcaraz has won two titles and tallied a 15-2 record, according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index. With that in mind, the Murcia native has an opportunity to quickly strike back before he is under pressure with 3,000 points to defend across Rome and Roland Garros.

There is also a chance for Alcaraz to successfully defend his points at those events. One year ago, Alcaraz beat Sinner in the final at both Rome and Roland Garros.

But Sinner will take confidence in his 17 match winning streak, during which he has claimed all but one of his victories in straight sets. He has now won four consecutive Masters 1000 trophies dating back to Paris last November and is fresh off his first clay-court Masters 1000 triumph.

It is Advantage Sinner in the battle for World No. 1, with plenty to play for in the coming weeks, which means there is even more reason for fans to keep a close eye on the PIF ATP Live Rankings.
