Arthur Rinderknech and Valentin Vacherot continued their doubles run at the BNP Paribas Open on Tuesday when they defeated fellow singles stars Novak Djokovic and Stefanos Tsitsipas 7-6(4), 7-5 in the second round.
Two days after defeating another team of singles standouts, Daniil Medvedev and Learner Tien in the first round, the duo returned to the court with a similar intent to defeat Djokovic and former No. 3 in the PIF ATP Rankings Tsitsipas.
In a match of fine margins, Rinderknech and Vacherot demonstrated immense composure. They saved three set points on serve at 5-6 in the first set and won four consecutive games after trailing 3-5 in the second set. The pair fired 11 aces and saved four of the five break points they faced, according to Infosys ATP Stats, en route to their one-hour, 42-minute win.
The cousins will face Karen Khachanov and Andrey Rublev — the only other pair of singles stars remaining in the draw — in the quarter-finals. Khachanov and Rublev edged Felix Auger-Aliassime and Sebastian Korda 7-6(3), 4-6, 10-5.
Djokovic and Tsitsipas earned a comprehensive 53-minute victory against defending champions Marcelo Arevalo and Mate Pavic in the first round. But they couldn’t keep their run going. Djokovic, a five-time champion at the event, will now aim to continue his singles campaign on Wednesday when he faces Jack Draper in the fourth round. Tsitsipas lost to Denis Shapovalov in the opening round.
In other doubles second-round action, Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos rallied past Frenchmen Sadio Doumbia and Fabien Reboul 2-6, 6-3, 10-5. The top seeds will next face Constantin Frantzen and Robin Haase, who upset fifth seeds Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz 6-4, 7-6(10).
Christian Harrison and Neal Skupski also advanced with a 6-3, 6-4 win against Orlando Luz and Rafael Matos. The fourth seeds will play Guido Andreozzi and Manuel Guinard in the last eight, who earned a 6-4, 6-4 victory against seventh seeds Francisco Cabral and Lucas Miedler.
Yuki Bhambri and Andre Goransson also reached the quarter-finals by cruising past Sander Arends and Jiri Lehecka 6-4, 6-4. They will face Alexander Erler and Andrea Vavassori, who secured their quarter-final spot by triumphing 6-3, 7-6(3) against Maximo Gonzalez and Andres Molteni.
