Marco Trungelliti became the oldest first-time tour-level finalist in the Open Era on Saturday at the Grand Prix Hassan II.

The 36-year-old upset top seed Luciano Darderi 6-4, 7-6(2), advancing to the Marrakech championship match in two hours and 10 minutes. The Argentine made his first ATP Tour semi-final 402 weeks ago in Umag (2018) and now will play for tour-level glory for the first time.

“Of course I believed it, that’s one of the reasons that I’m here, otherwise it wouldn’t be possible,” Trungelliti said in his on-court interview. “And also I’ve worked a lot, me and my team and also my wife, my kid, we all believed in breaking the record basically, and that’s exactly what we have done now.”

Victor Estrella Burgos previously held the record for oldest first-time finalist, having made the 2015 Quito final aged 34 years, 190 days. Estrella Burgos won that title.

Trungelliti has now put himself in position to lift the trophy on Sunday thanks to an abundance of drop shots against the Italian star Darderi. Already set to crack the Top 100 for the first time Monday, Trungelliti is up to No. 75 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings.

“It’s been happening the whole week, leaving the court with a victory,” Trungelliti, who will face #NextGenATP Spaniard Rafael Jodar or Camilo Ugo Carabelli in the final, said. “So hopefully [there] is one more to go.”
