Antonelli opens up on growth, control, and closing the Gap to Russell

By Balazs Szabo on

Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s second Formula One victory — earned with poise at the Japanese Grand Prix — felt like more than a milestone. It was a statement of intent from a driver who has not only survived the turbulence of his rookie season but has begun to turn those lessons into competitive steel.

After stepping out of the car at Suzuka, the 19‑year‑old spoke with a clarity that reflected both confidence and humility, offering a window into the evolution powering his early‑season surge.

“Big step. Experience does a lot,” he said when asked how much he has levelled up since his debut year. “Last year I’ve gone through a lot and it taught me massively more than what I anticipated… and for sure it’s helping so far this year.”

Antonelli has never shied away from acknowledging the difficulties of 2025, but now he speaks of them as raw material — the foundation for a more complete driver.

That completeness is beginning to show. “I definitely feel much more in control of the situation,” he added, a sentiment that has been visible in his racecraft. Suzuka demanded precision, tyre management, and patience, and Antonelli delivered all three with a maturity that belied his age.

The dominant form of his Mercedes has played its part, but he is careful not to let the machinery overshadow the work behind the wheel. “Of course, as you said, the car helps… I’m really, really grateful with the car that the team has provided us so far, and yeah, I just need to keep my head down.”

The dynamic inside Mercedes is equally important to understanding his progress. George Russell remains the established benchmark, and Antonelli is acutely aware of the challenge. “I’ve been closing the gap with him,” he said, before immediately adding nuance.

“I think still in qualifying he has the upper hand, especially when it comes to Q3. He’s always able to find that little bit of extra, which I’m working on.”

It’s a revealing admission — not defeatist, but analytical. Antonelli knows where he stands, and he knows where he must improve. Yet he also recognises the areas where he has already made strides. “In terms of race pace, I think we have a really strong base,” he said, a point reinforced by his calm, controlled drive to victory in Japan.

The new regulations have played a role in reshaping the competitive landscape, and Antonelli acknowledges that the reset has helped him narrow the gap to his teammate. “For sure it helps that everyone started from zero,” he explained.

“For sure it still helps, you know.” But he is quick to emphasise that Russell remains a formidable reference. “He’s obviously a super, super strong, very complete driver… that’s why it’s not going to be easy, and that’s why I need to do everything as perfect as possible.”
