Fils was on the brink of an early exit in the opening round against countryman Terence Atmane. He saved two match points to prevail 4-6, 6-4, 7-6(7) in his first match on European clay this year.

The next win came in a fairly straightforward manner for the former World No. 14 as he cruised past Brandon Nakashima 6-2, 6-3 to book his quarter-final spot at the ATP 500 clay-court event.

In the quarter-finals, Fils met second seed Lorenzo Musetti. The Frenchman gave Musetti no chance to find his rhythm and eased past the Italian 6-3, 6-4 to reach the semi-finals. With the victory, Fils earns his second Top 10 win of the year.

Fils faced perhaps his biggest test of the week in the semi-finals on Saturday against #NextGenATP Spaniard Rafael Jodar. Jodar entered the match on an eight-match winning streak. Despite losing the first set against the home favourite, Fils held his nerve and rallied past the 19-year-old 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. With the win, the 21-year-old advanced to the final in Barcelona for the first time.

In the final, Fils faced Andrey Rublev, who also rallied from one set down to reach the title match. Fils made a shaky start by dropping serve in the opening game. He quickly recovered and broke back to level at 2-2. The Frenchman then extended his lead after a deft lob helped him carve three break points, moving ahead 4-2 in the opening set.

After Fils clinched the first set 6-2, Rublev showed resistance early in the second set, earning three break points in the opening game. But Fils’ firepower was on full display as he saved the third break point with a roaring forehand winner and avoided dropping serve to begin the second set.

Fils then broke Rublev’s serve to earn a 4-2 lead with a perfect dropper and stood one game from victory after holding serve to lead 5-2.

Even though Rublev later rallied from a 2-5 deficit in the second set and saved three championship points at 4-5, Fils maintained his composure and eventually defeated the 28-year-old 6-2, 7-6(2) in one hour and 40 minutes to clinch his fourth tour-level title and first since his injury comeback.

With the win, Fils also became the fourth player in 2026 to save match points en route to winning a title, joining Ben Shelton (Dallas), Mariano Navone (Bucharest) and Tommy Paul (Houston) on that list.
