Carlos Alcaraz has withdrawn from the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell after undergoing a test on his right wrist this morning, the tournament announced Wednesday.
The No. 2 player in the PIF ATP Rankings defeated qualifier Otto Virtanen 6-4, 6-2 on Tuesday, but will not play his scheduled second-round match against Tomas Machac.
Alcaraz reached the final of the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters last week, but fell in the championship match to Jannik Sinner. Their encounter was a winner-takes-all clash, with the No. 1 spot in the PIF ATP Rankings also on the line.
Alcaraz had an opportunity to recapture World No. 1 from Sinner, but only by winning the ATP 500 event in Barcelona. The 22-year-old trails his great rival by 390 points in the PIF ATP Live Rankings.
The World No. 2 owns a 22-3 record this season, according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index. He has won titles at the Australian Open and in Doha.
Machac advances to the quarter-finals and will take on fifth seed Andrey Rublev orLorenzo Sonego.
