The all-new Thule Widesky rooftop tent is a lightweight hardshell that delivers the room of a vertical-opening model but the convenience of a clamshell. Meaning, you can open it completely from the back, but there’s no tight corner at the front preventing you from really sitting up inside.

Tyler saw this in person at SEMA 2025 (video here, skip to 22:30, or just watch the whole thing for lots of killer new overland gear), and it’s impressive in its simplicity. Or, at least when it comes to opening and closing it. Just release a few latches, and it opens on its own. Then just pull the long corded handle to close it back up. The fabric self-tucks as it closes, and everything just compresses into the hardshell – easy peasy.

This is a premium tent in every sense, with a couple of clever features that further set it apart. For example, the bed converts to a couch simply by pulling two cords. It turns the tent into a lounge, with huge openings on the back and sides, so you can sit back and enjoy nature from the elevated vantage point.

Integrated dimmable lights make it easy to read at night (just bring your favorite USB power bank, or run a cord to your vehicle’s power system). Internal pockets give you storage for your phone, books, snacks, etc.

Most full-featured tents are heavy, but the Thule Widesky comes in at just 147lbs (claimed). That’s on par with many “ultralight”, barebones RTTs, yet the Widesky is generously sized for two adults with a 79″ x 51″ sleeping area, and roughly 49″ of interior height.
