The European clay-court swing continues with ATP 500 events at the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell and the BMW Open by Bitpanda in Munich.

Carlos Alcaraz headlines the field in Barcelona, where he is a two-time champion, with Alexander Zverev arriving in Munich off the back of a semi-final run in Monte-Carlo. Top 10 stars Ben Shelton, Alex de Minaur and Lorenzo Musetti also compete this week. ATPTour.com looks at five things to watch at each event.

FIVE THINGS TO WATCH IN BARCELONA

1) Alcaraz top seed: Two-time Barcelona champion Alcaraz arrives at the tournament off the back of a run to the final in Monte-Carlo, where he lost to Jannik Sinner in the title match. The Spaniard, who will compete as the World No. 2 for the first time this year after losing top spot to Sinner, will hope to lift his third trophy of the season at the ATP 500 event.

2) Can Musetti bounce back? Musetti enjoyed a standout clay-court season in 2025, reaching the final in Monte-Carlo and semi-finals at Roland Garros and in Madrid and Rome. With points to defend this year, the Italian will look to gain in Barcelona, where he did not compete last season. Musetti suffered an opening-round exit to Valentin Vacherot in Monte-Carlo and is chasing his first win since the Australian Open.

3) De Minaur threat: De Minaur’s mother is Spanish and the Australian spent a large period of his early years living in Spain, having trained in Alicante. The 27-year-old will hope to find home comfort in Barcelona, where he reached the semi-finals in 2022. Last week, De Minaur advanced to the quarter-finals in Monte-Carlo, losing to Valentin Vacherot.

4) Draper, Fils compete on clay for first time this year: Jack Draper and Arthur Fils will both compete on clay for the first time in 2026 after missing Monte-Carlo. Draper advanced to the quarter-finals in Indian Wells in March, while Fils made the semi-finals in Miami.

5) #NextGenATP stars Jodar, Landaluce in action: Spanish stars Rafael Jodar and Martin Landaluce have both received a wild card. The 19-year-old Jodar, who faces Musetti in the first round, lifted his maiden tour-level trophy in Marrakech, while Landaluce, 20, enjoyed a breakthrough run to the quarter-finals at the ATP Masters 1000 event in Miami.

FIVE THINGS TO WATCH IN MUNICH

1) Zverev headlines: Defending champion and three-time Munich winner Zverev will hope to clinch his first trophy of the season at the ATP 500 event. The 28-year-old is 18-6 on the season, according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index, reaching semi-finals at the Australian Open and in Indian Wells, Miami and Monte-Carlo. Zverev lost to Sinner without winning a set at all three ATP Masters 1000 events. The World No. 3 opens against Miomir Kecmanovic, who beat Zverev in Acapulco in February.

2) Shelton hits European clay: Shelton will play on European clay for the first time this season in Munich. The 23-year-old American advanced to the championship match in Germany last year, falling to Zverev in the final. Zverev and Shelton are seeded to meet in the final, with the German leading the pair’s Lexus ATP Head2Head series 5-0.

3) Fonseca looks to build: Joao Fonseca advanced to the quarter-finals at an ATP Masters 1000 event for the first time last week in Monte-Carlo. The 19-year-old Brazilian will try to build on that good form in Munich, where he meets Alejandro Tabilo in the first round on debut.

4) Engel, Blockx receive wild cards: The 18-year-old German Justin Engel has received a wild card for Munich, alongside 20-year-old Belgian Alexander Blockx. Engel is seeking his first ATP Tour event win of the year, while Blockx is hot off four wins (including qualifying) in Monte-Carlo. Engel plays Vit Kopriva and Blockx meets Yannick Hanfmann.

5) Germans Krawietz/Puetz top seeds in doubles: Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz headline the doubles field on home soil and arrive high in confidence after winning their second ATP Masters 1000 title together in Monte-Carlo. Zverev teams with Marcelo Melo.
