Same number of titles. Same number of weeks at No. 1. Same number of… points?
Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner’s rivalry has been defined by each player’s ability to push each other to greater heights. The way the two players have consistently raised their level to match the other has kept fans gripped ever since their first tour-level meeting at the 2021 Rolex Paris Masters.
Alcaraz may lead the pair’s Lexus ATP Head2Head series 10-6 ahead of their meeting in Sunday’s final at the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters, but there are number of metrics by which it is impossible to separate the Spaniard and his Italian rival. Both have won 26 tour-level titles, both have spent 66 weeks as No. 1 in the PIF ATP Rankings and, remarkably, both players have won exactly 1,651 tour-level points against the other.
Despite his Lexus ATP Head2Head deficit against Alcaraz, Sinner has actually led the Spaniard in terms of points won against the other for the majority of their rivalry. Alcaraz won 14 more points than Sinner the first time the duo faced off in Paris in 2021 (a straight-sets win for the Spaniard), but Sinner moved 14 ahead after winning 28 more points than Alcaraz during their second encounter, at Wimbledon in 2022 (a match the Italian won in four sets).
Sinner did not relinquish the ‘points lead’ across a further 12 tour-level meetings with Alcaraz, until he won 23 fewer points than the Spaniard in the 2025 US Open final. That left him six behind his rival overall, before he won 78 points to Alcaraz’s 72 en route to victory in the 2025 Nitto ATP Finals championship match. That was their most recent encounter, leaving the duo tied at 1,651-all heading into the Monte-Carlo final.
Of course, whoever wins the most points on Sunday in Monte-Carlo won’t necessarily end up heading home with the trophy. On two occasions, both at Roland Garros (2024 semi-final and 2025 final), Alcaraz won fewer points than Sinner but still won the match.
There is also the possibility that the tie will remain in place after Sunday’s blockbuster matchup. Yet while Alcaraz and Sinner may end up still deadlocked on points, only one player will land the knockout blow to clinch the trophy on the Monte-Carlo clay thanks to tennis’ unique scoring system.
